Beyond the Basic Certifications

In today’s competitive yacht crew market, holding the minimum qualifications—like your STCW and ENG1—is just the starting point. With so many candidates meeting the baseline, what truly sets one crew member apart from another?

At Reardon Yacht Consulting, we’ve seen firsthand what impresses captains and owners. It’s rarely just about the job title. The most sought-after crew are those who consistently bring more to the table: more skills, more professionalism, more passion, and ultimately, more value to the vessel. To help get the inspiration flowing we’ve put together a guide to the certifications, talents, and niche skills that can help your CV stand out—for all the right reasons.

This guide was inspired in part by the work of Gemma Hulbert and her team at The Yacht Stew Academy—a dedicated training platform that helps interior crew build confidence, refine their skill sets, and advance in their careers. Many of her GUEST-accredited courses and upskilling courses are featured in our recommendations, but if you’re looking to seriously invest in your future, you can learn more about Gemma and her programs here.

With that, here’s our guide to the certifications, talents, and niche interests that can make your CV shine.

Professional & Technical Upskilling

These certifications and skills demonstrate a commitment to your craft and a willingness to go above and beyond.

  • GUEST Program Training
For interior crew, additional modules like silver service, bartending, flower arranging, and leadership training under the GUEST program make a big difference.
  • Mixology or Wine Certifications
WSET Level 2 or a formal mixology course shows you’re serious about elevating the guest experience. Not interested in alcohol? Learning the art of luxury tea service might be for you.
  • Advanced Dive Qualifications
For deck or dual-role crew, becoming a PADI Divemaster or Rescue Diver (especially with a valid instructor cert) is a huge plus on charter yachts in tropical waters.
  • Tender Driving (Advanced or Chase Boat Training)
Especially valuable on larger yachts or those with extensive tender operations.
  • Engine Room Familiarity (AEC1 & AEC2)
Even for non-engineers, showing technical curiosity and hands-on ability adds value.
  • Celestial Navigation
Rare, but respected. Shows you’re a student of the craft—particularly appreciated on sailing yachts.
  • Sewing, Repairs & Upholstery
Interior crew who can hem uniforms, patch damage, or assist with soft goods are gold during busy seasons.

Creative & Guest-Facing Talents

These may not be formal certifications, but they’re highly desirable when it comes to creating memorable guest experiences.

  • Musical Talent
Can you play guitar or piano? A few impromptu performances during guest downtime or in the event of AV problems can elevate the experience, especially on family or private charters.
  • Photography, Videography, & Drone Operation
Captains love crew who can help document trips. If you have drone or GoPro skills (and the discipline to respect privacy), highlight them.
  • Yoga or Fitness Certifications
Many guests request wellness-focused trips. A crew member qualified to lead a sunrise yoga session, Pilates reformer class, or HIIT boot camp on the aft deck adds serious value.
  • Languages
Multilingual crew always stand out. Even conversational fluency in French, Italian, or Spanish can go a long way in port.

Unique Hobbies & Life Skills That Shine

Sometimes it’s your personality and outside passions that make you memorable.

  • Freediving or Spearfishing
For adventurous programs, this is a plus—especially in the Pacific or Indian Ocean.
  • Sailing Experience (for Motor Yacht Crew)
Understanding wind and water dynamics gives you deeper seamanship—even if you’re no longer hoisting sails.
  • Marine Biology or Environmental Knowledge
For guests interested in conservation, crew who can talk intelligently about reef health or marine wildlife add extra value to excursions.
  • Event Planning & Hosting Experience
Have you planned weddings or theme nights? That experience is gold.
