That’s why we sat down with a seasoned crew recruiter, the lovely Jo Cooper who manages our Crew Placement program,  to answer your most pressing questions about landing (and keeping) your dream job onboard.

When should I reach out to a crew agent?
👉 You can reach out anytime for guidance, but you should have your STCW and ENG1 medical certification before actively applying for jobs.

What’s the next step after getting my certificates?
👉 Create an account with a crew agency, upload your CV and documents, and—if possible—visit the agency in person for a chat.

What qualities do recruiters look for beyond experience?
👉 A positive attitude, adaptability, and teamwork skills. You can be taught how to clean a boat, but you can’t be taught a good attitude!

What additional skills can make my CV stand out?

Should I apply to every job I see?
🚫 No! Applying for jobs you’re not qualified for can hurt your reputation. Instead, check in with agencies regularly to show your interest and availability.

What’s the deal with tattoos?
🧐 Visible tattoos can limit opportunities, depending on the yacht and owner’s preferences.

What’s the best way to start yachting if I have a maritime or commercial background?
🚢 Even if you have high-level maritime training, yachting is very hands-on. Be humble, learn fast, and be ready to help with all tasks onboard.

Is a CV photo required?
📸 Yes, it’s usually a requirement as owners like to see who they’re hiring.

How hard is it to land a deckhand job?
💪 It depends on your attitude! Networking, attending crew events, and being in the right place at the right time are key.

Are piercings allowed?
👂 Facial piercings should be removed for interviews and work.

Where should I go to network and find work?
🌎 Key yachting hubs: Fort Lauderdale, Antibes, Monaco, Palma, and Antigua.

When is the best time to job hunt?
📅 September–October for Caribbean season (Fort Lauderdale).
📅 April–May for Med season.
📅 December–January is a big turnover period after the holidays.

Are flights covered when hired?
✈️ Sometimes—depends on the yacht and contract.

Is dockwalking allowed?
⚠️ It’s illegal for foreign crew in the U.S., but in other locations, offer to help with day work instead of handing out your CV directly.

Can women work as deckhands?
💪 Yes, with the right qualifications.

How much time off do crew get?
🛳️ Typically 30 days per year, though some programs vary.

What’s an entry-level salary?
💰 $2,800–$3,500/month, depending on the yacht and role. Interior crew may earn slightly more.

Should I invest in more qualifications or gain experience first?
🎓 It’s a balance—some captains prefer hands-on experience, while others value formal training.
