Getting a job on a yacht can occur through someone you know, but more often than not, it is done through a more official crew placement process, such as through a crew recruiter, agency, or yacht management company. If you’re looking to get a job on a yacht, Michael Reardon offers tips below based on Reardon Yacht Consulting’s many years of helping yachts acquire qualified crew for yacht jobs.

Check out Michael’s sage advice for getting a job on a yacht once you’ve landed an interview with a captain, owner, or crew department head:

Getting a Job on a Yacht – Interview Tips from Michael Reardon

The Yacht Crew Interview Process

Presentation Tips

  • show up on time
  • dress well
  • smell good (or at least not like you haven’t showered for a couple days)
  • have your paperwork sorted out (and easily available electronically)
  • even if you have sent a CV / Resume and Reference List via email ahead of time, bring hard copies
  • spend time in the interview focused on both speaking and listening
  • don’t become distracted, especially by looking at your phone

Pitfalls & Deal Breakers

  • job candidates who don’t show up on time or who look sloppy
  • people who are easily distracted
  • job candidates sometimes give us resumes with references that don’t pan out; be sure that whoever you list as a work reference thinks highly of you, and pre-warn them that someone might be reaching out
